CARDIOLOGIST'S PACKAGE: Heart Failure & Chronic Heart Failure

Chronic heart failure. From Inflammation to Depression
According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), major depression is currently the third leading cause of morbidity worldwide, and it is estimated that by 2030, will come in first place. Depression and chronic heart failure have been recognized and observed as medical conditions for many years. Recently, there has been increasing explicit discussion of the link between chronic circulatory failure and depression—or even a whole group of neuropsychiatric disorders.
The new edition of the book has been expanded to include two additional chapters:
- Depression and Heart Failure as a Social and Medical Problem
- Depression and Heart Failure—A Shared Pathogenesis
The chapter on the mechanisms underlying depression and heart failure describes their common hormonal basis, emphasizing the specific role of thyroid hormones, anabolic hormones, parathyroid hormone, and dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary–adrenal axis. A discussion took place regarding inflammation in patients with depression and chronic heart failure, which affects nutritional status and leads to sarcopenia or cachexia. Coagulation disorders and arrhythmias, which also co-occur in both conditions, were not overlooked.
The remaining chapters of the book present the latest guidelines for understanding heart failure as a clinical entity that, despite the passage of time and advances in medicine, continues to be associated with high mortality and the need for hospitalization. Each of them addresses issues that are important from a practitioner’s perspective: primarily those related to establishing the correct diagnosis and implementing appropriate treatment, based on a holistic approach to the condition.
